Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Barbara Crow and the Dean's Advisory Board,
I feel it is appropriate to introduce myself before continuing, my name is Julia Pashak, and I am a second-year student who is striving towards a BAH majoring in Sociology and minoring in Global Development Studies. I am writing to you today after making the difficult decision to apply to drop DEVS 250 from my course load. I had been unknowingly struggling with an eating disorder since May of last year, however, it was not until January of this year that the physical exhaustion and mental brain fog became unbearable and evident in my deminer. Family and friends began raising concerns, which resulted in the challenging but right decision to enter myself into an eating disorder recovery program that operates through Durkham Psychology Wellness Centre. Before this process I had been in and out of doctor appointments, some in fact through Queens, addressing concerns about my stomach issues and overall inability to function like I had previously. It wasn't until recently that it became evident that this was directly correlated to my alarming weight loss in such a short period and the overall dangerous eating patterns that I have been displaying. My eating disorder not only impacts my physical being but has taken a massive toll on my ability to function cognitively, creating further stress which has been impacting my journey of recovery. The past few weeks I have truly tried my utmost to push through and give my all to not only my academia but my recovery, however, I am finding that both are becoming unmanageable. I sincerely do not recognize the student I am currently, as this decision would have never crossed my mind last year, however, I believe to recover It would be in my best interest to alleviate my course load to allow more time to focus on the changes that I am trying to implement to better my health. I chose DEVS 250 as the course to remove from my workload as it does not pertain to my major and it does not necessarily align with my desired field of study. I want to reiterate that this was a difficult decision, and I hope that I was able to communicate through my letter how challenging my Eating Disorder has made school. I am constantly trying to battle it every day, however, I am determined to continue my education and am hoping that this may aid in allowing greater focus on my other courses. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,
Julia Pashak (she/her)
