Petition Letter
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to petition for a consideration of my academic performance during the 2023 Fall semester due to extenuating circumstances that profoundly impacted my ability to focus on my studies.
Last year, my father fell seriously ill. The medical team suspected cancer, which led to immediate surgery during the summer. Post-surgery, his condition worsened significantly as he endured a drastic weight loss, and his surgery rendered him unable to eat or speak. Witnessing his suffering and grappling with the uncertainty surrounding his health consumed my thoughts and time.
The gravity of my father's condition compelled me to frequently visit him in Toronto. I prioritized his well-being and wanted to offer support to my family during this challenging period in any way that I could. However, these frequent visits, coupled with the emotional distress and anxiety I experienced, inevitably affected my academic performance. I found it extremely difficult to concentrate on my coursework and struggled to meet deadlines as my mind remained preoccupied with concerns for my father's health.
Despite the immense pressure and my overwhelming emotions, I tried my best to maintain a sense of normalcy and keep up with my studies. However, the burden of my father's illness weighed heavily on my heart, making it nearly impossible for me to focus on academics. While I managed to pass my courses, I acknowledge that the grades I attained do not fully reflect my true academic potential. The circumstances I endured significantly hindered my ability to demonstrate my capabilities to the fullest extent. Between worrying about my father’s condition and if I would ever get to talk to him again and trying to meet the demands of my coursework left me drained both physically and emotionally. At the time, I was still in shock and did not feel comfortable telling anyone about my situation. In hindsight, I realize that my reluctance to seek help or disclose my circumstances may have hindered my ability to receive the support I desperately needed.
Nevertheless, I finally got to a point where I can start asking for help. I remain steadfast in my commitment to academic excellence and am determined to overcome the obstacles that have impeded my progress. I humbly request your understanding and leniency in reassessing my academic performance, taking into account the extenuating circumstances that overshadowed my 2023 Fall semester.
Thank you for your consideration and empathy. I eagerly await your response and hope for a favorable outcome that will allow me to continue pursuing my academic goals with renewed vigor and determination.
As a note for the document I provided with this appeal, my fathers name is Dong Gui Lin.
