Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Academics,
My name is Wolfgang Schad and I am a second year Applied Economics student here at Queen's. Last year, one week prior to the ending of classes, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma after a surgeon found a cancerous tumour in my elbow during what I thought would be a routine surgery. I was unable to complete the final weeks of school as well as write my exams for the term due to being in the hospital receiving chemotherapy which started during my exam period. In my MATH126 class, I was currently holding a letter grade of C+ before missing my final midterm and exam. According to the Associate Director of Academic Considerations, my pro-rated calculated grade would have been a B- (calculated by my professor). I believe that I was not given a fair opportunity to improve my grade due to my medical conditions at the time. I read that you can petition for Aegrotat Standing within a year of said term ending. Due to my extenuating circumstances, I am hoping my grade can be bumped up. This grade is very important to me as I am trying to further my academics by continuing on to law school after my undergraduate degree. One argument against my claim would be to ask why I could not defer my exam. I was unable to defer because the time I was unaware of how long my treatment would be and if I would have been able to write it the following term. I am hoping you can understand the grounds for my claim. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Wolfgang
