Petition Letter
Dear Academic Dean,
I hope all is well. My name is Reena Younan (20405353) and I am currently in my first year hoping to major in Psychology. I am petitioning for a late withdrawal from a course, PSYC 100. Late November 2023, I got a severe concussion which did not allow me to return to school until the first week back from the winter break. This prevented me from writing my final exams so I got them deferred. However, earlier this year on January 7 I got into a bad car accident. I was in a neck brace and got another mild concussion which did not allow me to return to school for another week meaning I could not write my deferred exams. My sociology professor, Katie Coleman was very understanding with everything I went through and she quickly made a plan to reweigh everything evenly. The Psychology department on the other hand was more difficult. I tried emailing multiple people from the department several times and never received responses. They recently told me they sent it to the wrong person. On Tuesday, I finally had a meeting with Doctor Norris and she was extremely kind. I was also told the exam would be worth 70% of my mark. Knowing this is extremely stressful, especially for someone who suffers from severe anxiety. I missed almost 2 months of school/classes which led me to be behind. I do not feel confident taking the PSYC 100 exam because I am afraid of failing or doing badly. This class is very important to me as I want to major in it. I am planning to take it in summer school. Therefore, I kindly ask for your permission to late withdraw from the course. I understand I should have done this a while ago before the deadline but I wanted to try. I did not want to give up on myself because I had faith. As the exam date is approaching, I have realized I am not confident enough and I do not want a fail to appear on my transcript. I have both doctor's notes from my concussion and car accident if you would like me to provide you with those but I have submitted them to the academic considerations portal. I hope you can understand and help me out, this would be greatly appreciated!
Kind Regards,
Reena Younan
