Petition Letter
In POLS 403 we had our final journal assignments due March 28th. Around the time the assignment was due, I had received news that my grandfather was ill, and given his age that things did not look good. I am incredibly close with my grandfather and hearing this news really impacted me. I tried to work on this assignment despite struggling mentally but eventually I decided it would be better if I filed an application for extenuating circumstances and take the additional days to work on the assignment. As I was going home for Easter weekend, I had the opportunity to see my grandfather which ultimately made me feel worse. From the 28th to the 30th I still could not bring myself to work on the assignment, I had too much on my mind and nothing felt important. On the night of the 30th, following a conversation with my mom, I made the decision that I was going to finish the assignment on time (with the extenuating circumstances) as my grandfather cares greatly about my education. I stayed up until around 1:00am, exhausted but proud of myself for being to complete the assignment all things considered. I submitted the assignment and went to bed. In the following days I spoke to one of my classmates about the assignment when they said something about a work cited. As I was up late the night I completed the assignment and was not in the best headspace, I was unsure if I included a work cited in my assignment. When I went to my submission file on OnQ to ensure I did, I realized that I accidentally resubmitted my midterm journal assignment instead of my final journal assignment. After realizing this mistake, I emailed Professor Baisley explaining what had happened and submitted the correct assignment. When I received my grade back I was disappointed to receive a C+, but with everything that was going on I was happy I was able to submit it on time. That was until I realized my actual grade on the assignment was a B+, and I was deducted an entire letter grade for a honest mistake at a low point of my life.
