Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am writing to you today to request your kind consideration for the withdrawal of SOCY 122 from my academic record for the Winter 2023 term, due to significant personal circumstances that adversely affected my academic performance. I deeply regret missing the official deadline for dropping courses without financial penalty on January 20th, 2023, but an unforeseen family tragedy significantly impacted my ability to act within the stipulated timeframe and maintain my academic standards.
On March 4th, I suffered the loss of my uncle, a central figure in my life, who passed away unexpectedly in a small village in Gujarat, India. The suddenness and the emotional toll of this loss, combined with logistical challenges due to its occurrence in a remote location, significantly hindered my capacity to manage academic obligations effectively. This traumatic event coincided with critical academic deadlines, which impaired my ability to apply for Academic Consideration in a timely manner.
The grief and subsequent responsibilities I faced made it difficult to focus on my studies, particularly for SOCY 122, where I unfortunately received a grade of F. This course demands a level of engagement and concentration that I was unable to sustain during this challenging period. I acknowledge my oversight in not communicating directly with the instructor of SOCY 122 about my situation, influenced by my initial intent to withdraw from the course.
In terms of supporting documentation, I have limited access to formal documents due to the location and circumstances of my uncle’s death. However, I can provide screenshots from family communications detailing the event and a small obituary translated into English, confirming the occurrence and its impact on our family. Additionally, I am currently in the process of obtaining a letter from my therapist to fulfill the requirement for a professional letter as part of this petition.
Fortunately, I was able to communicate my situation to my CISC 102 instructor, Ms. Erin Meger, who granted me academic consideration for missing a quiz during this period. I can forward you the email correspondence with Ms. Meger, which validates the impact of my circumstances on my academic responsibilities.
The deliverables for SOCY 122 were due throughout the term, culminating in final assignments towards the end of April 2023. My inability to concentrate and engage effectively during this period significantly compromised my performance and ultimately my grade in this course.
Given these circumstances, I respectfully request that you consider my petition for dropping SOCY 122 from my transcript for the Fall/Winter 2023 term. I believe that this course's current standing does not accurately reflect my academic capabilities and continues to affect my overall academic progress and mental well-being.
I appreciate your understanding and consideration of my situation. I am committed to learning from this experience and taking proactive steps in the future to manage my academic responsibilities, regardless of personal challenges. Thank you for considering my request for academic consideration under these exceptional circumstances.
Sincerely,
Yash Mehta
