Petition Letter
I am submitting this petition in hopes of having all my courses from the winter 2024 semester drop, which are as follows, BIOL 360, BIOL 331, BIOL 200, BIOL 341 and GEOL 204.
I was unable to complete these courses to a satisfying degree due to a combination of many mental health issues. Due to anxiety and severe depression, I did not complete most of my coursework during the final weeks of the semester starting after the reading break, which resulted in my failure. These mental health struggles grew up until I entered week 10 and was actively in a suicidal mindset, this behaviour continued until April 2nd when I made an attempt at my life. After the incident, I took a few days to think things over before finally deciding to reach out to my loved ones and family to get help and improve my situation. Following this on April 7th went to the Emergency Department at KGH where I was assessed, thankfully they found that I did not suffer any long-term physical health issue and performed a mental health assessment. Due to these events occurring right around the end of the semester, I was unable to drop the course by the late drop deadline of April 8th. The reason my appeal is being sent your way so late is a mixture of dealing with my mental health and my family doctor being on vacation, meaning I had to wait for her to return to receive documentation.
Going forward, I plan to use the summer to deal with my immediate mental health concerns and during the upcoming school year to use my available resources to ensure I succeed in my courses and maintain my mental health, these include counseling, therapy, medication and peer support. I believe if I can be given a chance to move forward past this semester, I will be able to successfully complete my desired degree.
