Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science,
I am writing this petition to address the issue of the lack of assessment of certain assignments in FILM 112, which were turned in late due to extenuating circumstances.
Due to issues related to severe brain fog, lack of concentration, and derealization caused by medication (Atomoxetine) and the withdrawal of Lexapro from the months of March onward, I was unable to complete three assignments in the course on time. These assignments (7, 9, 10) were eventually submitted on April 24, 2024 (12:30AM), but were not assessed as course coordinators had begun developing marks for the course.
Since then, I have discussed the issue with my TA, and I eventually submitted academic consideration on April 8 and discussed the issue with Professor Naaman, the co-instructor of the course. However, since the academic consideration could only apply to the current term (May 1 onward), the professor was unable to do anything about the incomplete assessments at the time. Note that I have discussed academic accommodations with my TA beforehand in-person and through email.
Since then, I have emailed documentation to the professor such as the proof of extenuating circumstance form used to submit consideration (attached) as well as a doctor's note, detailing extenuating circumstances from the months of March to April (attached). However, I have received no response back.
The goal of this petition is to acknowledge the lack of consideration given despite the extenuating circumstances from March onward.
To combat these circumstances, in early April, I consulted with DrugSmart Pharmacy for immediate assistance regarding symptoms of the Atomoxetine and how it affected my ability to think and do work. Moreover, I have consulted with Student Wellness regarding these circumstances, had a couple sessions with a counsellor outside of school, and have since received support from my mother and doctor regarding the withdrawal of Atomoxetine/Lexapro.
Finally, regarding my performance in the course, I have completed every assignment necessary and have actively participated in every lecture and tutorial (unless otherwise stated due to short-term academic consideration). However, concerning assignments, three were left incomplete and were dropped as per course policy, but another three (7, 9, 10) were not assessed due to them being turned in late.
Thank you for your consideration. I request that the three assignments are to be assessed. Otherwise, please let me know what can be done about this.
Best regards,
Farhaan Ali
