Petition Letter
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally petition to drop the course ASTR 101, which I unfortunately failed in the previous winter term. I respectfully request that my situation be reviewed under the provisions outlined in Academic Regulation 3.3.1.2, allowing for the late drop of a class due to significant extenuating circumstances.
Throughout the term, I performed well in all assignments and quizzes for ASTR 101. However, the final exam was particularly challenging, requiring a minimum of 45% to pass the course. I was unable to meet this requirement due to a series of unfortunate and uncontrollable events that severely impacted my ability to prepare for and perform during the final exam.
A few days prior to the final exam, I was informed by my mother that my grandmother's health had significantly deteriorated. This news deeply affected me, as my grandmother had played a pivotal role in my upbringing. The night before my final exam, my grandmother passed away. The grief and emotional turmoil I experienced during this period hindered my ability to review the course material effectively and perform to the best of my abilities on the final exam.
Given that English is not my first language, the challenge of memorizing extensive professional terminology and reviewing a vast amount of material in a subject as demanding as astronomy was already significant. The added stress and emotional distress from my grandmother's passing exacerbated these difficulties, ultimately resulting in my failure of the final exam.
I have attached the necessary documentation to support my petition, including a certificate of cremation for my grandmother, a certificate of out relationship, and a certified translation of these documents. These documents clearly demonstrate the personal and extenuating circumstances that prevented me from dropping the course by the official deadline.
Failing ASTR 101 has significantly impacted my GPA, which is crucial for my applications to graduate programs at Johns Hopkins and Columbia University. Since ASTR 101 is only offered in the winter term, I do not have the opportunity to retake the course in time to improve my GPA for these applications. Therefore, I am requesting permission to drop ASTR 101 from my transcript and consider other elective options next semester.
I deeply appreciate your understanding and consideration of my situation. This has been a challenging period for me, and I am committed to ensuring that my academic performance reflects my true abilities and dedication to my studies.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
