Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean Stephenson,
I am petitioning the faculty’s decision that I must withdraw for a minimum of one year. I respectfully ask you to reconsider this decision based on the circumstances surrounding my academic performance.
In June of 2023, I was diagnosed with a condition that impacted my academic performance. I started seeking treatment in September of 2023 from a healthcare professional. This diagnosis had a moderate impact on my ability to attend class, focus, participate in groups, meet deadlines, and write assessments. To deal with these circumstances, I sought help from a healthcare professional and regularly met with my academic advisor (Vanessa McCourt). I also benefited from accommodations provided by QSAS, which have contributed to improvements in my academic performance.
Recognizing the importance of my education I am determined to overcome these challenges, and I have taken proactive steps to address them. One significant measure I have taken is switching my program from Kinesiology to Health Studies. This decision is informed by my previous performance in health studies courses as well as my passion for the subject matter, I do not doubt that this switch will have a significant improvement on my academic performance.
Furthermore, I will meet with my academic advisor and health care provider once a month, to ensure that I am staying on track. Moreover, I have a great desire to not only be a part of the Queens community but also contribute in a meaningful way. My involvement in Step Above Stigma, a mental health advocacy club demonstrated my commitment to contributing meaningfully to the Queens community and supporting others that may face similar challenges.
I understand and respect that the requirement to withdraw is intended as an opportunity for students to address issues and ensure future success. As such, I am using this summer to focus on personal development and implementing strategies to overcome obstacles that have hindered my academic progress. I am confident that the four months off from coursework will afford me sufficient time to resolve any issues and return to Queen’s University fully prepared to succeed.
Before starting university, I consistently excelled academically, maintaining a position on the honour roll while actively participating in extracurricular activities and clubs. My past achievements demonstrate my commitment to academic excellence, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue my education at Queen’s University.
I assure you that if granted the opportunity to continue my studies at Queen’s, I will approach my academic responsibilities with renewed dedication and diligence. I am fully committed to not only fulfilling my academic potential but also making valuable contributions to the Queen’s community.
Thank you for considering my appeal. I eagerly await your decision and am hopeful for the opportunity to demonstrate my readiness to succeed at Queen’s University.
Sincerely,
Takunda Govere
