I hope this letter finds you well.
I am writing to the Associate Dean (Academic) to see the possibilities of having my requirement to withdraw for one year request, reconsidered. This probation is more than well-deserved, and I understand the severity of my actions and the request to withdraw for one year as a period to assess my academic and professional goals. I also understand that when re-integrated into Queen’s society, I must boost my academic performance, in order to avoid being asked to withdraw for a three-year period from Queen’s University.
I am a ballet dancer, now based in Europe, and have had a strenuous year filled with application processes to work in professional theatres across Europe, including in person auditions. In the meantime, and perhaps the most stressful event of this year is my attendance at the National Foundation for Dance, based in Belgrade, Serbia, in which I will be receiving a diploma for successfully completing eight (8) years of ballet school, in accordance with the National Ballet school of Rome’s requirements. My final exams were completed on June 9th, to which I will be receiving my diploma within a short period of time. I spent the period from January-May preparing for multiple performances which would be held from April 28th-May 15th in theatres across Belgrade, as well as on the open stage during Belgrade’s “Day of Families” months.
The completion of this ballet diploma program, while simultaneously tending to a full-time course-load at Queen’s University, as well as auditioning throughout Europe for international ballet companies and performing proved to be a challenge for me and has affected my ability to properly focus on my studies, while maintaining a professional career, which is physically and mentally demanding. Had I not failed my HIST 124 course this past winter term, I believe my GPA would have been maintained at 1.60, and I would not have fallen into the request to withdraw from Queen’s for one year at this time.
My hopes with providing this letter, along with documentation and a realistic academic plan will lead towards a waiving of this request. I understand that the decision to waive this request is ultimately at the discretion of the Dean and Academic office at Queen’s University, and I can assure you that I will remain fully accountable for my further academic actions at Queen’s University.
I am more than willing to further discuss my situation with the Dean, or other academic heads at Queen’s University, in attempts to explain my individual circumstance.
