Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to appeal the requirement to withdraw from the Faculty of Arts and Science, effective May 1, 2024. Pursuing higher education has always been a cherished dream of mine, and I remain deeply committed to achieving my academic goals despite challenges. As the first-born daughter of immigrant parents, and the eldest of four, the opportunity to pursue higher education holds significant meaning for me and my family. Witnessing my parents' sacrifices and unwavering determination has instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility and gratitude, propelling me towards academic excellence. In 2020, my life took a dramatic turn due to a traumatic familial event, for which I continue to seek therapy. I must admit that this experience not only intensified my desire for education but also served as an escape. Upon arriving in Kingston, I was greeted with a world of opportunities previously beyond my imagination. Despite hailing from a different socio-economic and racial background than some of my peers, I integrated into the community by actively participating in clubs and student government.
Despite hardships, Queen's University remains my primary source of purpose and motivation. During the winter term, my personal circumstances at home significantly impacted my ability to focus on my academics, this triggered the feelings from the event in 2020. There were situations involving my family, particularly my father and brother, which required my immediate attention and caused considerable emotional distress. Trying to balance my family responsibilities while navigating my academic commitments became increasingly challenging. In addition, I had to stop going to private therapy sessions because I could no longer afford it. Despite my best efforts, I fell into a debilitating depressive episode, which severely affected my academic performance. I attended my exams and tried my best, but my depression deeply impacted my ability to complete coursework.
While I acknowledge the impact of these events on my studies, I want to emphasize my unwavering dedication to my academics. Despite what I have faced, I remained determined to persevere and overcome the obstacles in my path. Since the end of the winter term, I have taken proactive steps to prioritize my mental health and seek the support I need to thrive academically. I am currently engaged in counselling sessions through Student Wellness Services and am actively working on developing coping strategies to manage stress and maintain my well-being. Additionally, I have identified triggers that contribute to my emotional distress and have implemented measures to address them effectively.
During this challenging period, I have also come to understand the importance of seeking occupational therapy to further support my mental health and academic performance. Through therapy, I have learned that I must prioritize self-care and honour myself above all else. This shift in perspective has reinforced my commitment to my education, which I have cherished since childhood. I would be disheartened for something out of my control to take that away from me. I firmly believe that taking a year off would only hinder my academic abilities. My commitment to Queen's University remains stronger than ever, and I am eager to resume my studies with renewed focus and determination. I am confident that with the support of the faculty and staff, I can overcome any challenges that lie ahead and continue to pursue my academic goals.
I want to assure you of my earnest commitment to providing documentation supporting my circumstances. Unfortunately, the earliest appointment I could secure with my counsellor is scheduled for Monday, June 24th. Along with documentation from my QSAS advisor at an earlier date. Following these sessions, I will promptly submit the necessary documentation validating the challenges I have encountered and the proactive steps I'm taking to address them. I am fully dedicated to ensuring transparency and clarity throughout this process, and I appreciate your understanding in accommodating this timeline.
I sincerely hope for your understanding and compassion in reviewing my appeal. Queen's University holds a special place in my heart, and I am eager to demonstrate my potential and contribute positively to the university community.
Thank you for considering my appeal.
Sincerely,
Binyat Akrem
