Petition Letter
My name is Raif Rizwan Karkal (20261498, 20rrk2@queensu.ca) I am writing to formally request an exception to the 6.0-unit limit for courses taken via a Letter of Permission. I am currently a student in the Bachelor of Computing - Computer Science (CSCI-P-BCH) program at Queen’s University and am facing unique extenuating circumstances that necessitate this request.
Over the past year, I have been struggling to keep up with class lectures due to various personal challenges. Despite my best efforts to attend and participate in my courses, I have found it increasingly difficult to grasp the material effectively in the traditional classroom setting. This struggle has taken a significant toll on my mental health, further impacting my ability to perform well academically. I believe that enrolling in CISC 447 online at Athabasca University (equvilant course - COMP 400) will significantly enhance my understanding and retention of the course content. The flexibility and format of the online course align better with my current learning needs and allow me to manage my studies more effectively.
While I have successfully completed in-person courses at Queen’s University, it has been a struggle to keep up with the pace and demands of these courses, which has significantly impacted my mental health. During the winter of 2023 and winter of 2024, I had to take one course each term online at Athabasca university because I was unable to keep up with similar courses at Queen’s. These online courses allowed me to fully understand the topics and keep up with the content effectively. Furthermore, I have taken online courses at Queen’s University and found that I performed better and was able to learn the course content more thoroughly in the online format.
After reviewing the course content for CISC 447 (I am enrolled in it) that I am required to take at Queen’s University, I fear that I will be unable to keep up with the course if taken in person. This course is a core requirement for my degree, and as I am in my final year at Queen’s, it is crucial that I complete this course to graduate on time. I do not want to risk delaying my graduation by attempting to take this course in person. The Queen’s Computing website identified an equivalent course for CISC 447 at Athabasca university (COMP 400) that is offered online, and I would like to take this course instead. The online format will enable me to better grasp the material and successfully complete my degree requirements.
I would like to clarify that I took the two online courses at Athabasca University after attending the in-person version of the courses at Queen's University. Unfortunately, I struggled to keep up with the in-person courses At Queen's, which led me to enroll in the two online courses at Athabasca University over the summer. Therefore, after reviewing the content of CISC 447, I fear that I will be unable to keep up with CISC 447 and would like to avoid the situation of delaying my graduation to December, as I will be unable to take this course over the summer due to it not being offered at Queen's and the 6-unit limit. I would like to prevent the delayed graduation entirely by taking the course online in the fall of 2024.
I have also gotten support from the undergraduate chair of computing - Dr Yuanzhu Chen regarding taking CISC 447 (COMP 400) online at Athabasca University.
