Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean Stephenson,
RE: Request for Independent Study
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Regan Grieve (20342185). I am currently a third-year student at Queen's majoring in Sociology with a minor in Psychology. I am requesting your approval to take more than six units of coursework on an independent study at Florence University of the Arts (FUA) for the 2025 winter semester. I am determined to gain a profound understanding of various topics in my program. I believe the opportunity to expand my learning opportunities at FUA would be an excellent experience, enhancing both my academic and personal growth. I would like to highlight why this exchange opportunity aligns with my educational and personal goals.
FUA requires students to enroll in a minimum of 12 units to be eligible for participation. The courses I have selected (Gentrification: Urban and Social Inequality, Human Rights and International Criminal Justice, Cross-Cultural Psychology, and Social Psychology) will fulfill my program's requirements. These courses will offer a unique perspective that is not available at Queen's, providing me with a broader, more global understanding of my program.
Beyond academics, studying at FUA will provide a unique opportunity for personal growth. Immersing myself in a new culture will enhance my adaptability and push me out of my comfort zone, helping me develop essential life skills. Furthermore, this experience will enable me to build international connections with peers who share my passions, which could be beneficial for future job opportunities in my field.
I have been in contact with FUA, the International Office, and the Program Department heads to discuss the transferability of these courses, and I understand that your approval is required to proceed further. I kindly request your support in allowing me to take the necessary credits to meet FUA's enrollment requirements.
I appreciate your time and consideration of my request. I look forward to the possibility of discussing this further. I would be happy to provide you with any additional information upon your request.
Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely,
Regan Grieve
