To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally petition for enrollment in CHEM 112 past the deadline due to significant extenuating circumstances that have greatly impacted my academic performance and ability to enroll on time. I understand the importance of adhering to deadlines, but I believe that the challenges I have faced warrant consideration for an exception in this case.
During my first year, I encountered numerous difficulties that severely affected my academic performance. My mother’s health deteriorated significantly, requiring surgeries over 2023-2024. As the oldest daughter with a little sister eight years younger than me , I found it challenging to balance my academic responsibilities with the demands of trying to cope with my own family's struggles. These personal difficulties coincided with a distressing living situation in dorm life. My roommate exhibited racist and homophobic behavior. This created a hostile environment, documented with res- life, and further exacerbated the stress I was under. In March 2024, my roommate finally moved out, but the emotional toll it took on me was significant and I am already a person with diagnosed mental health issues . ( BPD Depression Anxiety )
As a result of these circumstances, my ability to prepare for and complete my original final chemistry exam was compromised. My instructor, who has been incredibly supportive, rescheduled my exam for mid-September to allow me time to recover and adequately prepare. She has really been there for me during all of this. However, the week of my rescheduled exam I contracted COVID-19 & rhinovirus and was in the hospital . I have documentation from a healthcare provider indicating the hospital visit.
Given this challenge ; a deferred exam ( scheduled before courses deadline) I was unable to attend due to my illness. I am petitioning to be added to CHEM 112 because if I pass my deferred exam, I should be allowed to continue with second-year chemistry ( I would take in summer) . If I am not enrolled, I will be forced to repeat first-year chemistry and wouldn’t want to fall back even more behind if this has to be the outcome without having it to my timetable.
I understand the pace of the academic year has picked up, and I am still awaiting a final date for my deferred exam. Nevertheless, I want to ensure that I am positioned to move forward with my studies without further delay. I am committed to living up to my potential and successfully completing of my chemistry courses, despite the challenges I have faced.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss my situation further if needed.
Sincerely,
Nadia Persaud
