Petition Letter
I am writing to respectfully petition for credit (CR) standing in MATH225 (Summer 2024).
I am requesting CR standing due to a heart condition that significantly impacted my performance in the final exam. Since mid-February 2024, I have been dealing with another health issue, which have had a more prolonged and severe effect than both my doctor and I anticipated. This led me to submit multiple long-term academic consideration requests and defer numerous academic tasks. By June, I had largely recovered from that health issue. However, in my eagerness to make up for the postponed and accumulated academic work and other matters, I overextended myself, working more hours than before my illness and failing to rest properly. Believing that my health issues were resolved and determined to catch up academically, I decided not to drop MATH225.
However, in August, I began experiencing discomfort in my heart and sought medical attention. The doctor diagnosed my heart condition and indicated that it was likely caused by the excessive workload and lack of sleep while I was still recovering from my previous illness. While the condition had not yet reached an irreversible stage, the doctor strongly advised me to rest, avoid stress and emotional strain until my heart recovered to prevent a relapse of my earlier health issue and the worsening of my heart condition or even a heart attack.
I followed the doctor's advice, took regular medication, and rested for nearly two weeks, which led to some improvement. When I returned to Canada in early September, I felt well enough to resume most daily activities and mistakenly believing that this would be my final opportunity to take the MATH225 final exam as I had already postponed it once, I made a ill-advised decision to take the online final exam.
Unfortunately, during the exam, I began to experience significant heart discomfort, which worsened as the exam progressed. When the discomfort became severe enough to make me unable to read or write properly, I informed the proctor that I needed to take medication and rest, but my condition did not improve. I then informed the proctor that I needed to use my phone and contacted my doctor, who advised me to take medication for emergency situations as soon as possible, end the exam, and call for an ambulance if the symptoms did not improve or worsened further. After taking the emergency medication, I informed the proctor that I could no longer continue with the exam. Fortunately, my symptoms gradually eased after taking the medication. However, my heart condition severely impacted my ability to complete the exam, leaving several questions unanswered and those I did complete far below my usual standard. As a result, my poor performance on the final exam led to a passing but substantially lower grade (D+) than expected.
I have already taken steps to address my health condition. I have dropped two courses to reduce my workload, allowing me to avoid overexertion and ensure sufficient rest. I have also chosen courses without midterm or final exams as much as possible to avoid the intense stress and emotional strain. Additionally, I am continuing my medication and have set limits on my daily work hours and minimum sleep requirements to aid my recovery. Currently, I am able to meet the requirements of my remaining courses within the previously mentioned working hours, and with medication and rest, I am generally able to function in daily life. I anticipate a recovery by the end of the term and plan to maintain my current work plan until then.
I would greatly appreciate your consideration of my petition for CR standing in light of these circumstances.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
