Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to formally request the removal of two courses, MECH 270 and CIVL 231, from my academic transcript due to extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my performance. I hope to convey the profound challenges I faced during this period and the direct connection to my academic struggles.
In summer 2023, I found myself in a situation that demanded my full attention and energy: caring for my father, who has been battling severe drug addiction and mental health issues. Despite reaching out to my accessibility advisor in July, I did not receive a response, which left me feeling unsupported during a critical time. This struggle intensified in September 2023 when my father's girlfriend, someone I had known for years, overdosed and died. This event precipitated a steep decline in my father's mental health, further amplifying my responsibilities as the eldest child and essentially his caregiver.
Throughout this period, which lasted several months, my own mental health suffered greatly. I was overwhelmed and found it increasingly difficult to balance the demands of my father's care with my academic responsibilities. As a result, I had to prioritize my limited energy on certain courses, which unfortunately led to my neglect of MECH 270 and CIVL 231.
Over the past year and a half, I have reached out to my accessibility advisor multiple times regarding my mental health struggles. However, due to the personal nature of my circumstances, I often hesitated to disclose specific details. Additionally, my support network was limited to my sister, who could provide assistance, but is also a full-time student, so I did not want to burden her with my situation.
As a consequence of these compounded challenges, my GPA has been significantly affected. I am now seeking to have these failed courses removed from my transcript, as I believe they do not accurately reflect my capabilities or dedication as a student.
Thank you for considering my request. I appreciate your understanding and support.
Best regards,
Angelique Iannuzzi
