Petition Letter
Dear Members of the Petitions Committee,
I am writing to respectfully request credit standing for my courses during the Winter 2024 term. Throughout this period, I dealt with ongoing family health issues that were entirely beyond my control and that seriously impacted my academic work.
My father, who had previously undergone major surgery, continued to experience persistent post-surgery complications. One of the most distressing challenges was his severely restrictive diet, which caused him to lose a significant amount of weight over the course of the term. Watching him struggle with his nutrition, energy, and overall well-being was emotionally taxing and raised constant concerns about his long-term recovery.
In response to these difficulties, I traveled home far more frequently than usual, sometimes at short notice, to support both my father and the rest of my family. I can provide travel logs and bus tickets to confirm the extent and frequency of these visits. Although I made every effort to keep up with my coursework—completing readings, working on assignments, and studying for tests—my focus was often overshadowed by worry and uncertainty. Concentrating on complex material or performing at my best under these circumstances proved challenging.
To help manage the emotional strain, I reached out to a counselor at Student Health Services in late March 2024. While I do not have their letter in my possession, I understand it has been submitted directly to the Board. Additionally, I have letters from my father and his doctor verifying the seriousness and prolonged nature of his health issues.
Under normal conditions, I am committed to my studies and invested in my academic success. Unfortunately, the extraordinary stress of this family health crisis made it impossible for me to fully demonstrate my true abilities during the Winter 2024 term. By granting credit standing, you would acknowledge that these circumstances were neither predictable nor within my control, and that my academic record should reflect not just my final marks, but also the harsh reality I was facing at the time.
Thank you for considering my petition. I appreciate your understanding and the time you have taken to review the additional documentation and context surrounding this request.
Sincerely,
Rina Dong
