Petition Letter
My name is Yiwen Wu. My student id is 20433921. I am writing this email to provide a detailed account of my current challenges and to request your understanding of my recent unfortunate events. As a student enrolled in the Math 280 Advanced Calculus at the university, I am seeking your consideration to allow me late drop the class.
The main reason I intend to drop the class is that I believe the class did not fit my future study directions. Math 280 Advanced Calculus is a course that stresses a student’s calculation ability. It has a higher requirement for students’ calculation abilities and the handling of multiple variables, integrals, and geometric concepts. The class’ stress on computation and geometric visualization did not align with my strengths or learning preferences because, after a semester of learning, I realized that I have more interest in theoretical classes, such as Math 210, which has algebra concepts, including ring theory, equivalence classes, and rigorous proof-writing, etc. I am more interested in its study of logical reasoning, the ability to construct formal proofs, and a comprehensive understanding of mathematical structures rather than practical calculation skills. I am convinced that currently, mastering the professional ways of thinking and having a unique understanding of the profession is more important than having the practical calculative ability to solve problems.
Given that the change of direction was a major decision, I even took a MBTI test to understand myself. It shows that I am an ISFP person, which just as I expected, proved that I am more of an intuitive person than a sensing person, as you can see in the attachment. As I realized that the result could not make the ultimate decision for me, I also took two theoretical classes in this winter semester, Math 210 and Math 281 that stress more on the theoretical study. After studying the outlines, I was determined that these classes could provide me with the professional comprehension I am longing for. Hence, based on this, the class, Math 280 was not the ideal class for me, and I thereby humbly request the university allow me to late drop the class.
In addition, recently, I found it increasingly difficult to concentrate on study. I had many sleepless nights. I booked a Chinese doctor online to check on my condition, only to find out I was diagnosed with depression. During the fall semester, however, my situation got worse. I started to find it hard to concentrate on the questions. Instead, I spent most of the time wondering what would happen if I failed the exam, which gave me more pressure and drove me in the opposite direction of passing the course. While I tried to drag my thoughts back, I realized that I had a memory loss and could not remember what I memorized before. I then got anxious about the situation and had more negative thoughts. My hand even started to sweat because of all the pressure and biological reactions that my body was having.
Being in the situation is neither what I want nor what I can control. As I now realize that my situation had a serious impact on my future academic career, which I respect and cherish very much, I am here humbly to ask for special consideration and let me late drop the class.
I am a diligent student it was never my intention to let my mental situation interfere with my academic performance. I feel deeply sorry about what happened. This was a situation that I had never thought of before. Even though the class is very inspirational, and I have learned a lot from it, it was not what I wanted. Based on my given situation, I therefore sincerely hope the university can let me late drop the class.
My MBTI personality result and medical condition report are in the attachments. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please contact me if there are any problems.
