Academic Plan
FILM 200 does not directly relate to my degree plan or my career plan to be a counselling psychologist, though I do still believe it would be beneficial to learn about the study of video games. The recent cultural impact of video games is something that could not be studied in much depth until today because they are becoming increasingly widespread and normalized for all people to play. I find this to be highly interesting because, as someone who studies psychology and sociology, it makes me wonder how this has affected people today. I am very aware that video game addiction is becoming increasingly common, especially in young boys and men, so I think that learning about them would help me grow a larger appreciation for video games in order to approach the topic with compassion and understanding, rather than dismiss it as immature.
GNDS 312 does directly relate to my degree and career path and would be a valuable method of gaining knowledge about Black feminist thought. While I do learn some things about Black feminism, I believe that taking a course about it would provide me with a level of knowledge and understanding of concepts that will prove to be useful for my future. I always want to be able to provide a listening ear or helpful hand to someone who is experiencing discrimination. I want to be a part of the push for society to continue to become increasingly inclusive and tolerant. It is imperative for me that I can be as compassionate and knowledgeable as I can about these kinds of topics because, as a future counselling psychologist, I want to provide a safe space for all people to come to me about any issues that they have faced. I believe it is crucial for people to speak up about their experiences with discrimination and prejudice because it is, in my opinion, one of the most effective ways of moving towards an inclusive, safe society for all people.
