Petition Letter
Dear Members of the Academic Appeals Committee,
I am reaching out to respectfully petition for approval to enroll in Research Methods, HLTH 252, despite the registration period closing on January 17th 2025. This request arises from challenging circumstances related to my diagnoses of ADHD, depression, and anxiety, which have significantly affected my capacity to remain organized with academic requirements, deadlines, and overall structure. The completion of this course is crucial for my graduation this spring, and the circumstances have intensified my symptoms, making it difficult to sustain emotional and academic balance.
Managing ADHD, depression, and anxiety presents daily challenges that impact my ability to concentrate, manage tasks, and sustain a clear perspective on long-term academic objectives. ADHD has frequently created challenges in prioritizing and monitoring critical requirements, such as ensuring I had enrolled in all mandatory courses for my degree program. This difficulty is compounded by the disorganization that often comes with my condition, which, as a result, intensifies my anxiety. When confronted with overwhelming administrative tasks or pressing deadlines, my anxiety can escalate to an unmanageable level, resulting in avoidance instead of resolution.
The combination of these challenges has created a vicious cycle in which my anxiety and depression exacerbate disorganization, which in turn, impaires my ability to meet deadlines and manage crucial responsibilities. For instance, while managing the demands of my class in previous semesters, I often felt extremely overwhelmed by competing priorities, which made it difficult to focus on broader academic requirements such as degree audits or course scheduling. Regardless of my best efforts, the failure to register for HLTH 252 is a direct result of these cumulative effects.
In recognition of the impact of my conditions on my academic performance, I have been actively seeking professional support. I have maintained consistent communication with my psychotherapist, who has assisted me in developing coping strategies for managing the influence of my anxiety and depression. Furthermore, I have communicated with my physician to address the physical and mental health challenges that come with my diagnoses. These continuous efforts illustrate my dedication to managing my conditions and making sure they do not hinder my abilities to achieve my academic and personal goals.
The realization that I am not enrolled in a required course for graduation has triggered a re-emergence of my anxiety and feelings of inadequacy. This intensified emotional state has resulted in an increasingly difficult ability to focus on my current course load, which has further jeopardized my academic performance. Completing this course is not only a necessary for my graduation but also a step toward personal fulfillment, as earning my degree alongside the rest of my peers signifies an important achievement in my journey of overcoming these obstacles.
Given these circumstances, I kindly request that the committee review my application to enroll in HLTH 252. I completely recognize the importance of following academic policies, yet I feel my circumstances represent an extenuating circumstance that merits an exception. If permitted to enroll, I am prepared to work diligently to fulfill the course requirements and demonstrate my ability to succeed despite these hardships.
To further support this request, I can provide documentation from my physician outlining how my conditions impede on my academic performance and their endorsement of my ongoing efforts to address these challenges. I am also receptive to any further measures or requirements the committee may deem appropriate to assist my enrollment in this course.
Thank you for taking the time to review my petition and consider my enrollment into HLTH 252. I value the opportunity to complete my degree and am determined to overcome the challenges presented by my diagnoses. Please feel free to contact me for further clarification.
Sincerely,
Ethan Attias
