Petition for Course Drop Due to Extenuating Circumstances
Dear Associate Dean,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally request permission to drop my elective course, ENGL 111, without academic penalty, due to extenuating personal circumstances that have significantly impacted my academic performance in this course.
Last semester, my father was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and soon after underwent two major surgeries in November and most recently in February, and requires further treatment. This has been an incredibly challenging and stressful period for my family and I, which has taken a toll on my mental and emotional well-being. The uncertainty and emotional distress surrounding his diagnosis and treatment have made it difficult for me to focus on my coursework. Since January, I have found it increasingly difficult to balance my academic responsibilities while supporting my father’s medical journey. The impact of this situation has been ongoing, and I have struggled to keep up with the coursework for ENGL 111, resulting in poor performance on both the first assignment and the midterm exam.
Throughout this period, I have done my best to manage my coursework by prioritizing the required courses for my program while attempting to complete and achieve in my assignments for ENGL 111. Unfortunately, despite my efforts, I have been unable to keep up with the demands of the course. I have sought support from my professors and attempted to stay on track, but the emotional strain has made it difficult to engage with the material effectively.
To ensure that I stay on track with my academic progress, I have enrolled in a course for this summer to make up for my lost credit. This will allow me to focus on completing the necessary coursework under better circumstances and without the additional emotional stress that I have faced this semester.
Given these circumstances, I kindly request to be granted permission to drop this elective course without academic penalty. I understand the university’s policies regarding course withdrawals, and I hope my situation can be considered under the extenuating circumstances policy.
I appreciate your time and consideration and sincerely hope for your understanding in this matter. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Victoria Bucci
