Petition Letter
to the Associate Dean (Academic)
I am petitioning to waive the deadline for petitions for Credit Standing. I would like to be able to petition for Credit Standing for courses I took in 2020, 2021, and 2023. I was unaware that the option to petition/appeal grades even existed until just recently.
In the summer of 2019 just before starting at Queen's for first year, I was diagnosed with a number of serious mental health diagnoses, and began treatment. Despite this and the challenges of finding the right combination of treatments and supports, I was able to complete first year of undergrad with success. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my diagnoses and multiple challenging life events that were not in my control, I struggled significantly during second year which negatively impacted my academics, and this is reflected in my transcript. At the beginning of my 3rd year in Fall 2021, I encountered significant struggles that required me to enter a treatment facility, whereupon I had to take time away from studies to focus on recovery and my health.
I was able to return to studies Winter 2023, but continued to struggle. I was also unaware of support available at Student Wellness Services and in the Kingston Community until just recently.
In November 2024, I was able to connect with Student Wellness Services and get connected to multiple community supports, as well as Academic Advising.
We are making a plan for me to be able to complete my degree and graduate in the spring of 2025.
I would like to be able to petition for Credit Standing for courses I took in 2020, 2021, and 2023 that were negatively impacted by my health and factors outside my control.
I was unaware that the option to petition/appeal grades even existed until just recently.
Thank you for considering my petition request to waive the deadline for appeals.
