Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Alexandra Korakis and I am finishing my third year of studies at Queen's University. The reason I am writing to you today is to try and have a late drop for the courses that I have failed in the fall semester of this year. The reason that I am asking for this late drop of my courses is because at the beginning of the semester last semester I had a few familial problems that occurred that I didn’t realize were going to affect me in terms of school as much as they did. At the beginning of the semester last year my father had gotten into some trouble and was dealing with the possibility of going to jail and had started to take that stress out on me. He had always been somewhat mentally abusive to me throughout my life, but this had made it worse and it really affected my mental health. At this same time my uncle had a terminal brain tumor, which we had known about the tumor for a couple of years, but at this time he had been diagnosed to only have about 6 months left which was really difficult to deal with in general, and especially with everything happening with my dad at the time as well. I also spent time last semester going back home to visit him because he didn’t have much time left and I wanted to be there for his 3 children, my younger cousins, at this time. I know that I had to have a petition done last year as well to have some courses dropped as well as getting the requirement to withdraw waived and part of that was that I was going to be doing better this year, but unfortunately these circumstances were unexpected. The issues with my dad have since been resolved regarding his status on being arrested, as well as the fact that I now do not have a relationship with him and that has thoroughly improved my mental health. My uncle is also still alive but we know that won’t be the case for much longer. Even with that I am at a place now where I have accepted this and come to terms with it, and I know that my academics are of top priority and that is what I am focused on. This can be seen with my grades as of this semester. I have done a lot better in all of my classes where I am not only passing, but I have done very well in some of them. This is something that I plan on continuing into next year and further on, as well as in the summer course that I have signed up for and I am taking to keep me motivated and on the right track with my academics. I am extremely sorry about this inconvenience of last semester and these grades, but as I said this was not something that was expected and I am back on the right track now which can be seen with my grades this semester, as well as the initiative that I am taking to keep my academics on the right track with taking summer courses. I would really appreciate it if these courses could be dropped because they do not showcase my real academic abilities and how much I care about my degree.
Thank you for your consideration,
Alexandra Korakis.
