Petition Letter
To the Academic Progress Committee,
I am writing to respectfully petition for a late course drop for CHEM223 in the Winter 2025 term. I understand that the deadline to drop the course has passed, but I am requesting an exception due to extenuating circumstances that have significantly impacted my academic performance and well-being this semester.
Despite my best efforts and continued engagement with the course, I recently received my midterm grade and was devastated to learn that I performed so poorly that it is now mathematically impossible for me to pass the course, regardless of my performance on the final exam. This realization, combined with my current mental and emotional state, has led me to conclude that I cannot successfully prepare for or write the final exam scheduled for April 14th. Instead, I would like to redirect my focus and energy toward my remaining course and final exam, which follows shortly after.
I am registered with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) and have accommodations in place due to being on the autism spectrum. This semester has been especially difficult for me. I have experienced significant academic burnout, compounded by my neurodivergence, which has affected my executive functioning, energy levels, and ability to keep up with the demands of multiple courses. These ongoing challenges have had a direct impact on my academic performance in this course, particularly during the midterm period.
While I have been doing my best to stay on top of my responsibilities, the toll on my mental health has been considerable. I have continued to try and engage with the material and complete assignments to the best of my ability, but it has become clear that remaining in this course would only further harm my academic record and well-being. I have consulted with QSAS previously and will continue to seek their support moving forward.
In light of the above, I am requesting to drop this course as of April 10th, prior to the final exam, to prevent it from impacting my GPA and to preserve my capacity to succeed in my other academic responsibilities. I understand the significance of this request and do not make it lightly, but I believe it is the most reasonable course of action given my circumstances.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration of my petition.
Sincerely,
Ellie (Friesen-) Irving
