Petition Letter
Dear Dr Stephenson,
I hope you are well,
I would like to start out by apologising for submitting this just past the year deadline for late drops, but I was filling out the petition form and did not realise that by taking 30 minutes to write the petition letter, I would be subject to a complete refresh upon clicking ‘next’. This refresh then did not leave me with nearly enough time to completely redo it before the deadline, and I am currently writing this letter in my notes to copy and paste so it does not happen again.
I am petitioning to late drop my winter 2024 courses, as I was suffering from significant mental health issues that prevented me from completing my courses last year. I fell into a vicious cycle, where my faltering mental health made my performance and attendance in my courses worse and worse, which in turn exponentially worsened my mental state, and so forth. By the time my grades weren’t saveable, I can honestly say I was considering the worst. I therefore decided to take a mental break from everything to do with Queens, which allowed me to completely focus on bettering myself, and with this mental load off, I was able to do so. I then took a lot of time at the end of the year and over the summer to do a lot of reflection. I considered taking time off, transferring somewhere closer to home, or completely dropping out. After a lot of soul searching, I eventually realised what it was that I wanted: to come back and to see my degree through. This decision was not one I took lightly, and majorly was off the back of a realisation of what I want to do post university, which is to teach English as a second language, specifically at a school that I have been offered a job at, on the conditional that I first complete my degree. And so, I put everything I had into the current: staying on top of my mental state this year, and my courses. I am happy to say that despite not being fully there with my mental health just yet, I have seen significant improvement in my courses this year. I have recently been into the Wellness Service, and was recommended to go back and drop my courses from last year, seeing as I don’t need to put as much into the present, as my courses have wrapped up. I am aware that it is too late to drop my courses from the fall term, and they will serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilantly staying on top of my mental wellbeing. I hope that I am able to drop my winter term classes, so that my GPA is not as drastically brought down by a very hard year for me, and subsequently my academic standing for next year. I still have a lot of work to do on myself before that time, but I feel confident that the improvement I have seen this year will only continue in September.
I thank you for taking the time to read this,
Kind regards,
Jack Hodgins
