Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to formally request a deferral of my exams due to a severe and ongoing medical condition.
I have been diagnosed with a pituitary lesion, which causes debilitating symptoms. These symptoms impact my ability to function across basic “life” tasks. Studying for my exams, getting to Kingston, and writing my exams will be impossible until I receive treatment.
My condition began on March 26th and is worsening. I am bedridden, unable to sit or stand for extended periods without dizziness, vision loss, nausea, and involuntary tremors. Stress and exertion also cause episodes. I suffer from a constant, severe headache. On some occasions, I experience a loss of motor function and loss of consciousness.
The uncertainty and stress surrounding my condition has impacted my mental health, especially as many of my usual coping mechanisms are no longer accessible to me in my current state.
The diagnostic process is underway, but treatment has not been determined yet, apart from urgent treatment for pain while hospitalized twice due to acute episodes. Testing has included two MRIs, a CT scan, multiple rounds of bloodwork and urinalysis, three echocardiograms, multiple ECGs, and motor function testing. I have recently seen an endocrinologist who is pursuing additional investigation, and I am waiting for a neurosurgical consultation and consultations from other specialists.
My condition has taken a physical and cognitive toll that has severely impacted my quality of life and my ability to engage with my coursework. It is difficult for me to concentrate on a task due to pain. This would affect my time management and comprehension of the course material. If I experience an episode during an exam, I would not be able to finish.
Due to the severity, unpredictability, and ongoing nature of my illness and treatment, I respectfully request to defer my exams until a time when I am medically stable and better equipped to participate meaningfully in my academic responsibilities.
I have included a doctor’s note in my appeal, and I will request documentation at your request along my path from diagnosis to treatment.
