Petition Letter
My name is Ava McKay and I am going into my third year at Queens. I am currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts with honours, my major being DEVS and minor EMPR.
After having the summer to reflect, I have decided to bring an issue to light. In the winter semester I was enrolled in POLS 112.
Due to the strike, the final exam was canceled and students were informed they would receive a CR grade. I will also attach the email below stating this. The email states “students will receive a CR grade so long as they have attended lectures and tutorials as well as submitted their essay outlines and essays”. It is also important to put an emphasis on the fact that the final exam was CANCELLED.
Saying this, you could imagine my surprise when I received my grades for the semester only to see a C+ under POLS 112. As I understand the strike was lifted, it is unfair to students to change the entire format of the course, as well as not disclose that we would be receiving letter grades.
Another issue to highlight is at the time of the essay I was severely sick with a sinus infection. I was granted academic consideration from the school, but it is unclear if this was honoured when the essay was marked as no one ever responded to me since it was during the strike. Therefore I may have encountered late penalties on my essay. It is also unclear who marked the essays, as I find it hard to believe I received that low of a grade after continuously showing up to office hours and following the outline my TA gave me. I can also show proof of academic consideration etc.
After pleading my case, I was wondering what the process for future steps are. Is it possible to get a grade removed from my transcript? I have friends who have gone through this process so I was curious on next steps. I would also be open to receiving a CR grade.
I plan on pursuing law school after undergrad and a C+ drags down my GPA. I wouldn’t typically do this but considering the circumstances it is very unfair and misleading to students. Please let me know who I can discuss this issue with further.
