Petition Letter
Office of the Associate Dean (Academic)
Queen’s University
September 9 2025
Dear Dr. Naaman,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Julia Kohn and I am a third-year Psychology student at Queen’s. I am writing to request to take more than 6.0 units through another university in the Winter Term of 2026.
I plan to attend the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon for a semester exchange and I believe that taking a full course load there would greatly enrich my studies, and provide unique and valuable academic opportunities. I am dedicated to finding cultural experiences that will broaden my academic perspective, and gain firsthand insight into global differences. While I am deeply invested in my current Psychology program, I believe that gaining diverse academic experiences will be extremely beneficial to my current studies, and future academic goals.
The courses that I intend to take will enhance my knowledge, and provide me with new perspectives beyond psychology, and in various other fields. Given the rapidly evolving nature of the current workplace, I believe that the chance to take classes at an interdisciplinary level is an extremely unique and valuable academic opportunity. The wide range of knowledge these courses offer will provide an extremely meaningful and rare educational experience. The courses I plan to take are:
1. Brand Expression and Identity
2. Emotions in Social and Cultural Relations
3. Major Events and Event Management
4. Europe and the World After 1945
5. Groups and Inter-Group Relations
Along with recognizing the vast academic experiences I will gain with this exchange, I am also prepared to manage any challenges that may arise. To support my success, I plan to create a comprehensive weekly schedule that will allow me to balance my classes with independent study time in order to excel academically. I also will have a strong support system both academically, with guidance from Queen’s advisors, and personally, with my family and friends.
While I recognize that Queen’s students are currently limited to only 6.0 units at an alternate school, I believe that each of the courses I’ve chosen will be highly beneficial to my learning, and represent a rare experience, both culturally and academically. In order to maintain progress with my degree and maximize the opportunity that is presented, I believe that taking a full 15-unit course load is the most suitable course of action for my personal academic development. After exploring various course options, I am confident that taking a full semester course load will provide me with a unique educational experience, and equip me with transferable skills that will support my success in today’s interdependent world.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Julia Kohn
