Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Naaman,
I hope this finds you well.
My name is Giulianna Gonsalves and I am a fourth year Concurrent Education student; Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Music and Minor in French Studies.
In the Winter Semester of 2025, I took the course MUSC 323 Alt. Study 3B Applied Music (Piano) for 3.00 units. I attended every lesson, every studio class, performed in studio and participated in class discussions.
Towards the end of the semester, I suffered from episodes of tremors, pain, and numbness in my right arm and hand. Considering my state, my Professor Dr. Ireneus Zuk, advised me not to do the piano exam and to defer it to the 2025 Fall semester (thus it being an Incomplete Grade). At the beginning of the summer break (April 16, 2025 and May 3rd 2025), I saw two professionals: my family doctor and neurologist, both of which advising me not to play the piano until tests (MRI and EMG which were documented as urgent) are completed and investigated for clearance to play again. They believe that I may have nerve damage. The EMG has yet to be completed and the appointment date is on May 19th, 2026 which was the earliest appointment, and out of my control. I have attached documentation for this matter.
Following consultation with Dr. Colleen Renihan, Undergraduate Chair at the DAN School of Drama and Music, it is with great respect that I request that I may complete MUSC 323 with an aegrotat grade comprised of work completed up until the final assessment. Dr. Renihan is willing to provide a letter of support if required.
Thank you, and I truly appreciate your consideration.
Sincerely,
Giulianna Gonsalves
