Petition Letter
To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Molly Galvin (student number: 20215433), and I am writing to respectfully request permission to complete 15.0 units (five courses) through Athabasca University, which exceeds the current limit of 6.0 units that can be taken outside of Queen’s.
I began my undergraduate studies at Queen’s University in 2020 and studied on campus for four years. During that time, I faced extenuating circumstances, including a traumatic event in Kingston, which significantly affected my academic performance and my ability to complete the required coursework. As a result, despite attending full-time, I was left behind in my degree progress. At the time, I made efforts to continue with my studies but was not able to perform to the best of my ability due to the circumstances.
Since then, I have taken time to focus on recovery and building stability in my personal and professional life. I am now employed full-time as a Business Analyst with Community Futures Eastern Ontario, where I work condensed weeks (Monday–Thursday). This schedule, while allowing me to dedicate Fridays through Sundays to academics, does not allow me to return to Kingston or align with the scheduling of available Queen’s courses. Additionally, the online options currently offered through Queen’s do not meet the requirements of my revised program plan.
To make completion of my degree feasible, I plan to change my program to a BA in Economics, General, which will reduce the number of outstanding requirements to five courses (15.0 units). Athabasca University offers the flexibility of individualized, asynchronous online study, which is the best and most realistic path forward for me to complete these courses while balancing full-time employment.
I am therefore petitioning to be granted permission to complete all 15.0 units through Athabasca University. I believe this approach provides the most effective solution to my circumstances and will allow me to successfully meet the requirements to graduate from Queen’s University as soon as possible.
If required, I can provide additional documentation regarding the extenuating circumstances; however, I note that details were included in previous petitions I have submitted and which were granted.
