Petition Letter
I am writing to request academic consideration for MUSC 171, a course I completed in my first year. I am seeking a CR designation due to extenuating circumstances that significantly affected my academic performance during that term, as well as misinformation that contributed to the delay in submitting this petition.
During the semester in which I took this course, I was going through a difficult grieving process, which deeply impacted my emotional well-being and ability to focus on my studies. As a first-year student still adjusting to university, I found the transition especially challenging under those conditions. The structure of this course and the teaching style were not conducive to my learning needs at the time, and I also struggled with non-factual information being presented in class, which further discouraged me and affected my academic engagement. These circumstances had a direct effect on my performance throughout the duration of the course.
Following this experience, I met with an academic advisor who informed me that I could appeal the grade and request a CR at any point in the future. Relying on this information, I did not file a petition earlier. I have only recently learned that this understanding was not accurate, which is why I am submitting this request at a later stage. Since then, I have also attempted to retake the course; however, it has never been possible due to ongoing scheduling conflicts.
At present, I am applying to law school, and the grade from this course continues to have a significant impact on my overall GPA. I have worked hard throughout the rest of my degree, and I believe that a CR designation would allow my transcript to more accurately reflect my academic abilities and the progress I have made since that difficult period.
Thank you very much for your time, understanding, and consideration of my petition.
Sincerely,
Nikita Boyd
