Petition Letter

Petition to waive RTW1
I am writing this petition to waive the requirement to withdraw from Queen’s University for one year. I am requesting that I be reinstated for January for reasons I will explain below.
In May I received a letter that informed me that I had to withdraw from studies at Queen’s and, when I received this letter, I was very scared and embarrassed about the position I had put myself in. I was unsure about how to handle the situation and neglected to share the information with my parents and I missed the deadline to appeal. Since then, I have acknowledged my mistakes and learned valuable lessons from them. In October, I submitted a request to waive the appeal deadline and allow me to write this letter in the hopes to return to studies for the winter semester in January 2026.
In the time I have had away from school, I have received help and guidance from professionals along with the support of my parents. I now have a better understanding of the factors that contributed to my challenges academically. When I arrived at Queen’s, I was grieving the loss of two close family members. I didn’t realize how deeply these deaths impacted me, and my well-being. This fact was compounded by a prolonged illness in my first year which left me fatigued for months. I entered my second year feeling discouraged by my performance in the first year while working to build up my physical and mental well-being. It was difficult for me to make progress due to my own personal challenges. These extenuating circumstances affected my performance as a student and my ability to seek help.
However, I am ultimately responsible for failing to meet my own expectations and that of Queens. Through therapy and ongoing executive functioning & study skills training, I have demonstrated that I am ready to return with new skills and a deeper understanding of myself and the opportunity I now appreciate. If I am able to return to Queens for the winter semester this January, I will be committed to being a better student. I have become more self-aware of my needs, my strengths and weaknesses.
In preparation of continuing my studies, I am working with Heather Carter, Student Engagement Lead, to assist me in being thoughtful about course load and selection. I want to be certain I am engaging with professionals at Queen’s in this important decision as I get back to my studies. In working with Heather I have been using other Queens resources such as the major maps and online guides through the Queens Student Academic Success Service. We have discussed the possibility of a reduced course load in the event of my readmittance in winter term as well as taking courses again to improve on the grades I have received.
While I am sorry that this has happened, I am stronger now than I was, and more grateful for the opportunity. I hope you consider this letter as my sincere way to resume my studies.
Thank you for your consideration.
