Petition Letter
For 2014/2015 school year I took Psyc 235 starting fall of 2014 and Stat 263 in the winter term to 2015.
In November and December of 2014 my father was very ill. He struggled through January and on February 4 he passed away. During this period I found I had trouble concentrating and keeping organized to do all the work that was required. I talked with the professors (via email) in both courses during this period. The workload became too much and I dropped Stat 263. However I continued to struggle with Psyc 235 albeit passing the course. The professors for the course did provide assistance by extending the deadlines for assignments. I talked to student counselling for advice and they provided the required letters for extensions to assignment and more time for the exam.
Unfortunately, on July 22nd a very close friend died within two weeks of being admitted to hospital. I was involved with the funeral service and support for family. I was already struggling with the loss of my father and this exacerbated the situation. This was very close to the exam date (one week). I completed my assignment and studied for the exam. However, I just found out that I did not pass the exam and therefore fail the course.
The extenuating circumstances I mentioned were out of my control. I communicated my concerns to Queen¿¿s professor and Queen¿¿s counselling and tried to be realistic about my expectation during that period.
Based on the circumstances I am appealing my grade from a fail mark due to failing the exam to a pass grade based on pro-rating of the performance throughout the course. This is supported by the course professor Mike Best. I have emails of all my conversations to support this appeal both from the professors of Psyc 235 and Stat 263 and Queen¿¿s student counselling.
Thank you, Imtiaz Ahmed
