Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am writing to petition to add HLTH 200 and PHIL 301 to my course load after the official add deadline. These courses are option requirements for the Health Studies Plan, which I am in the process of planning to switch into. I believe that adding these courses is academically appropriate and necessary for my progression in this program.
I was unable to add these courses by the official deadline due to significant extenuating circumstances beyond my control. In December, my grandmother passed away, which had a substantial emotional and academic impact on me. During this time, I was experiencing grief, distress, and difficulty concentrating, which affected my ability to manage administrative and academic responsibilities, including course planning and registration decisions. As a result of these circumstances, I was granted Academic Consideration and deferred my PSYC 100 exam, as I was not in a suitable mental or emotional state to perform academically at that time.
In the weeks following my grandmother’s passing, I needed to take personal time away from my studies to process my grief and support my family. While I attempted to keep up with my academic responsibilities as best as I could, I was not able to give full attention to course selection and program planning before the add deadline. This directly contributed to my delay in requesting to add HLTH 200 and PHIL 301.
Since then, I have had time to reflect on my academic goals and have regained focus and clarity regarding my studies. I have determined that HLTH 200 and PHIL 301 are important for my intended transition into the Health Studies Plan and will support my academic and career interests moving forward. I am committed to completing these courses successfully if my petition is granted.
Thank you for your consideration of my petition.
Sincerely,
Madison Ferreira
