Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Studies)
I am appealing to drop CHEM 282 (Winter 2015) due to an unexpected family emergency.
During the 2015 winter exam period I was ill with food poisoning and was unable to write my CHEM 282 exam, which lead for my exam to be deferred. The re-scheduled exam was scheduled to take place on August 14, 2015 at Queen's. I was prepared to return from Kelowna, BC to Kingston for this scheduled exam date. At this time however I was unable to return to Kingston and physically be at the exam due to an unforeseen family emergency. My grandmother in whom I am the primary care giver of fell ill on Tuesday August 11 and was admitted to the hospital in the intensive care unit. At this time I was unable to make my flight scheduled for August 12 from Kelowna to return back to Kingston to write the exam. My presence was needed at the hospital to assist in her care. This was a difficult time for me as I was the only family member assisting in her care and recovery, along with being present in the situation. She remained in the hospital for two weeks and I helped make her transition home on August 26.
Upon this event I was in contact with Professor Carran who was very helpful and accommodating. In telling him my situation I was offered to write the CHEM 282 exam during the 2015 fall exam period. My grandmother is recovering and is seeing drastic improvements in her current state of health. Because she is in a stable condition I am returning to Queen's this September taking a full time course load. In pursing a full course load I think the completion of CHEM 282 will be too demanding as I have been away from the course material for an extended period of time. I do not believe I will be successful in studying for six exams during the fall 2015 exam period, as it will be very difficult for me to review this material in addition to taking five courses. I believe it is in my best academic interest to drop CHEM 282 (winter).
Thank you for your consideration in this request,
Sincerely
Brianne Moore
