Petition Letter
I am writing to formally petition for permission to enrol in PHYS 414 after the add/drop deadline in order to complete my degree requirements.
The extenuating circumstance that led to this situation was an unusual academic event beyond my control. I did not become aware that I was missing three units from a fourth-year PHYS elective until this morning when I received my official fourth-year audit. This audit was released after the add/drop deadline, and prior to receiving it, I reasonably believed that I was on track to graduate, as I had applied for Spring 2026 convocation under that assumption.
Because this information was not available to me before the deadline, I was unable to take action earlier to enrol in an additional course. As soon as I became aware of the issue, I immediately contacted the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Department of Physics to seek guidance and begin addressing the situation. I am currently missing only three units, and enrolling in PHYS 414 would allow me to satisfy this remaining requirement and complete my degree.
The impact of this situation is significant. I am a fourth-year Physics major who is also enrolled in the Concurrent Education program. Graduating this spring is required in order for me to proceed into my final year of the education program. If I am unable to graduate on time, I will lose my guaranteed spot in the program, which would substantially disrupt my academic and professional trajectory.
I have taken all reasonable steps since learning of this issue, including consulting with the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Department of Physics. I have received strong departmental support for this appeal, including confirmation from the Undergraduate Chair that he supports my enrolment in PHYS 414 at this stage and has advised me to begin attending lectures while the appeal is under review.
This situation was not the result of academic negligence or poor performance, but rather the delayed release of critical academic information. I am fully prepared to complete the required coursework and to catch up on any material missed at the start of the semester.
For these reasons, I respectfully request approval to enrol in PHYS 414 after the add/drop deadline so that I may complete my degree requirements and graduate as planned.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Dalena
