Petition Letter Regarding to Take More Than 6.0 Units on a LoP
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to submit a petition requesting permission to take more than 6.0 units of courses on a Letter of Permission during the upcoming Summer term.
I am currently in good academic standing and planning my Summer enrollment to ensure timely completion of my degree. My proposed plan is to enroll in three online courses offered by Queen’s University and three courses at a visiting institution. I understand that the standard policy limits students to a maximum of two courses taken on a Letter of Permission, and I am therefore requesting approval for an exception.
This request is based on academic necessity arising from an external internship commitment during the Summer term. I have accepted a full-time, on-site internship position as a Data Analysis Intern from May 6, 2026 to July 31, 2026. This internship requires full-time, in-person participation outside of Canada, which makes it impossible for me to attend any on-campus instruction at Queen’s University during this period.
In order to continue making academic progress while fulfilling this internship commitment, I am limited to courses delivered fully online. While I am able to enroll in three online courses at Queen’s University, the number of online offerings that satisfy my remaining degree requirements is limited. As a result, it is necessary for me to supplement my Queen’s enrollment with additional courses at a visiting institution.
If restricted to only two external courses, I would be unable to complete the required coursework within the appropriate sequence, which would significantly disrupt my degree progression and likely delay my expected graduation. Completing three courses externally, alongside three online courses at Queen’s, allows me to remain academically engaged while meeting the requirements of my internship and avoiding an extension of my program.
I have carefully considered the academic workload associated with this plan and believe it to be reasonable and manageable based on my academic record. This arrangement has been developed to support steady degree progression while also gaining relevant professional experience.
