Subject: Petition to Drop Course After Deadline
I am writing to request permission to drop the course MATH 112 (Linear Algebra) after the official deadline due to circumstances that prevented me from making an informed academic decision.
According to the course syllabus, the grading scheme is based on three quizzes worth a total of 45% and a final exam worth 55%. The syllabus also states that if a quiz is missed for a legitimate reason, the remaining quizzes will be reweighted. Additionally, I have attached a photo that contains the announcement from the course in which the instructor states that only the best two out of the three quiz marks will be counted.
The three quizzes were held on February 4, February 25, and March 25, as outlined in the syllabus. Each quiz consisted of a small number of short-answer questions. Despite this, there were huge delays in grading throughout the semester, with quizzes taking approximately a month to be returned and without meaningful feedback.
Prior to the third quiz, I was aware that my performance was below my expectations. However, based on the “best 2 out of 3 quizzes” policy, I reasonably believed that performing well on the third quiz would allow me to improve my standing and potentially pass the course.
The third quiz was written on March 25, while the official course drop deadline was April 6. Given the short length of the quiz and that solutions were released shortly afterward, I reasonably expected that the grades would be returned before the deadline so I could make an informed decision about whether to remain in the course.
However, the grade for Quiz 3 was not released until April 12, after the drop deadline had passed. I have attached an image showing that the Quiz 3 marks were released on this date. Upon receiving my grade, I realized that my performance had not improved as expected. My two highest quiz marks are 45% and 47%, which makes successfully passing the course highly unlikely.
As a result of the delayed grading, I was unable to accurately assess my academic standing before the drop deadline. If this information had been made available before the drop date, I would have made the decision to drop the course prior to the deadline.
I take responsibility for my academic performance, however, I believe that the delay in receiving critical grading information prevented me from making a fully informed decision within the required timeframe.
For these reasons, I respectfully request permission to drop MATH 112 after the deadline.
