Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am writing to respectfully request Credit Standing (CR) for the following Winter 2026 courses:
PSYC 203 — D-
PSYC 324 — D
PSYC 354 — D-
I am requesting Credit Standing because my academic performance in these courses was significantly affected by documented illness during the final part of the Winter 2026 term and the examination period. I completed the required components of these courses and received passing grades, but my illness affected my ability to study, attend to course work effectively, prepare for final assessments, and perform to my usual academic ability during a critical period of the term.
According to my medical certificate, I was affected by ongoing respiratory symptoms from March 29, 2026 to April 24, 2026. The certificate states that, for medical reasons, I was unable to attend work or school during this period, and that these symptoms may reasonably have affected my academic performance. This period overlapped with the final weeks of the Winter 2026 term, the pre-examination period, and the final examination period. As a result, my ability to prepare for and complete my PSYC assessments was substantially impaired.
The impact of these circumstances is reflected in the contrast between my PSYC grades and my other results in the same term. In Winter 2026, I received an A+ in JAPN 100B and an A in FILM 215. However, I received a D- in PSYC 203, a D in PSYC 324, and a D- in PSYC 354. These PSYC grades are unusually low compared with my other academic performance and are not representative of my usual ability or effort. Rather, they reflect the effect of the documented illness during the final and most academically important part of the term.
I understand that Credit Standing is normally reserved for courses in which a student has completed the course components, including the final examination, and passed the course, but received a substantially lower grade than expected because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond the student’s control. I believe my situation falls within this category. I am therefore respectfully requesting that the final grades in PSYC 203, PSYC 324, and PSYC 354 be replaced with Credit Standing (CR).
I also understand that PSYC 203 is a required course for my plan, and that CR standing may have implications for plan requirements or prerequisites. If Credit Standing is granted, I would appreciate confirmation that PSYC 203 will still count as credit earned toward my degree and plan requirements, or guidance on any further steps I should take.
To support this petition, I have attached my medical certificate and my grade information for the Winter 2026 term. Thank you very much for taking the time to review my petition.
Sincerely,
