Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean Academic Dr. Dorit Naaman,
This petition requests the Faculty waive the decision that I withdraw for one year and that I be allowed to late-drop the following courses from the Fall 2025 to the Winter 2026 semesters:
ENGL 296 (Fall 2025)
JAPN 200 (Fall 2025-Winter 2026)
GNDS 282 (Winter 2026)
LLCU 360 (Winter 2026)
LLCU 395 (Winter 2026)
The exceptional circumstances which caused my poor performance, which were beyond my control, as well as my plans to prevent future encumbrance as a result of them are outlined below.
1. Bereavement
On January 23rd, a close family member of mine suddenly passed away (see Supplement A). I received a short accommodation for this from January 23rd to February 5th, but this time was not sufficient for my recovery. The event had profound, ongoing impacts on me and my immediate family which could not be accommodated in two weeks (Supplement B). The exact time frame of this residual grief is difficult to determine, but began noticeably interfering with my academics between March 23rd and April 10th.
Following this, I have since worked through this grief to an extent that it will not continue to affect my academics and I will also be pursuing counseling over the summer.
2. Severe Illness
From February 9th to February 23rd, I became severely ill for two weeks and was unable to attend class or complete homework (see Supplement C). This also interfered with my plans to catch up over my reading week. I attempted to pursue accommodations for the evaluations missed during this time, but my overall academic performance could not recover after three missed weeks of class (four including reading week).
Following my recovery, I updated my immunizations to ensure illness does not interfere with my future academics (see Supplement D), as I was not previously immunized by my parents.
3. Undiagnosed Disorders
For the past year or so, I have been dealing with undiagnosed Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which causes multiple symptoms discordant with academic work. In combination with the above circumstances, I believe this is a significant portion of my reasoning for poor performance this semester.
It has been difficult to receive a proper diagnosis, but I will be pursuing a temporary accommodation with QSAS over the summer, pending diagnosis and treatment from a psychiatrist (Supplement C).
Addendum: Previous Recovery from Probation
I have previously been on academic probation during the 2023-2024 academic year and was able to recover my GPA properly by the end of the term (Supplement E). I believe I would have been capable of doing the same this year if not for the exceptional circumstances listed above (especially points 1 and 2).
Thank you very much for your consideration.
