Petition Letter
To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is to appeal to waive the 21 day deadline to request a CR in KNPE125. I am a fifth year undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts and Science, majoring in Health Studies. As part of my core course requirements, I had to take KNPE125: Introduction to Human Physiology instructed by Professor Brendon Gurd. The appeal will be based upon extenuating circumstances that occurred during winter 2015 which impacted by ability to succeed in this course specifically, in which I received a D as a final grade.
On January 20th, 2015, I suffered from a concussion. I saw a physician at La Salle and I have attached documentation verifying the extent of the injury. The concussion inhibited my ability to attend class or study for the monthly exams, as I was instructed to refrain from doing so. On February 10th, 2015, I went back to La Salle for a second time informing healthcare professional Anna Klein that my performance had not improved. At this time, I was excused from all academic work until February 24th, 2015.
On February 26th, 2015, a friend of mine, Brady Vickers, passed away while on exchange from Dalhousie University to Seoul, South Korea. I had known Brady for 8 years, and this loss has been devastating. With this tragic event happening during my recovery, it also negatively impacted my ability to get back into my academic routine. The funeral was held on April 25th, 2015, and I found that it was only after that time I could begin the healing process.
As my transcript demonstrates, I received adequate grades in the other 4 courses I had been taking in the winter term (HLTH497: B+, ANAT270 (online): B+, HLTH305: B+, HLTH415: A-). These courses were easier to keep up with as assignments included of essay writing (a skill in which I had been developing over the past 4 years at Queen's) or online exams in which I could do at home without the degree of pressure I found in KNPE125.
It has only recently come to my attention that the academic appeal process existed. Had I known that this was possible, I would have certainly taken that option during the appropriate time frame.
