Petition Letter
Dear Whom it may concern,
I am writing this letter to request dropping Ancient Humour (CLST205) after the course drop date. My reason for requesting this is because I am failing the course due to extenuating circumstances.
During the past semester, I had gone through period of time where I was depressed and lost all motivation. I would often spend days at a time lying in bed. I would be sleeping often up to twenty hours at a time just because I was happier when I was asleep than I was awake. My eating was irregular to the point where sometimes I would eat several days worth of food in one sitting and then go the next few days with out eating. To be honest, I was quite a mess. I had dark thoughts often and everything just seemed extremely gloomy and pointless.
As a result, my attendance for all my classes have dropped along with the quality of my schoolwork. I have been failing or barely passing all of my courses. Most of my courses have a final exam which gives me a chance to ¿¿redeem¿ myself and make up for my poor performance shown earlier in the semester. The reason I am requesting only to drop Ancient Humor and not any of my other courses is that Ancient Humor does not have a final exam and 50 of the marks come from online quizzes while the other half comes from participation. I have been caught up with most of my quizzes as my friends and housemates have been there to support me and help me stay on track of them but my participation marks are next to zero out of fifty.
I actually had attempted to drop the course before the deadline and made an appointment to talk to my professor about dropping it. He however, told me that there can be other solutions and if I was interested in the course, he could provide me with an alternative to dropping the course. However, after a while, I stopped hearing back from him and followed up with two more emails before I got a reply. My intentions are not to point fingers and I hate to put any blame on Dr. Griffith as he has been very helpful but the delay in communication has made me miss the course drop date.
But back to my condition. It has improved since and I have been trying to overcome it as well as make up for my missed coursework and whatnot. I know I could probably appeal all five courses and hope for an easy way out of this but it was my mistake and I am willing to take the consequences. I am willing to work hard to try and reverse the damages done by my depression. However, due to the nature of this particular course, I just cannot bring up my mark and I cannot afford to have a fail on my transcript and hence this appeal. I am currently trying hard with all my courses in hopes of raising my marks and although I definitely won¿¿t be getting the marks I had hoped for, I feel confident that I can still do decently on most of my courses. I have gone to see a counsellor to talk about my problem and next steps for it and honestly, I feel like I have taken steps to remedy the situation as best as I can. I hope you will consider allowing me to drop Ancient Humor without academic penalties if possible.
My counsellor said that she will be writing a letter and that I should mention that a letter from her will follow.
Regards,
Renpei Chen
