Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Johanne Benard,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I am writing to appeal to drop ECON290 (Fall 2015).
Since I was already struggling with this course, I had intended to drop it by the required deadline of November 4th, 2015. However, I missed this deadline due to my mother¿¿s health¿¿s deterioration. Consequently, I continued with the course but knowingly struggled with it and performed poorly. After speaking to an academic advisor, it was suggested to me to appeal to drop the course.
My mother¿¿s health has been gradually deteriorating leading to her hospitalization on November 1st, 2015, my mother, Ghada Hammouda, after enduring heart problems. She was then catheterized on an emergency basis and had to undergo treatment for two weeks. Fortunately, she is now better than before. However, as an international student with my single mother living alone in Egypt, I was worried about her wellbeing and remained extensively preoccupied with the situation. I made sure I was updated on a regular basis but my concentration on schoolwork in general was significantly affected. Given that ECON290 was one of my more difficult courses to begin with, this circumstance rendered it more difficult for me to perform to my full potential. Thus, upon my arrival in Egypt I immediately sought out the documents required to submit my appeal.
In the future, I will make sure to more carefully select courses that meet my academic strengths with the help of an advisor, as well as take measures earlier on to mitigate similar circumstances. In addition, before returning to Queen¿¿s for the spring term, my family will ensure my mother has live-in support, which will reduce the level of concern I would have as an international student.
Enclosed is a doctor¿¿s report regarding my mother¿¿s condition, which I hope will suffice. I would be happy to answer any questions or provide any additional documentation needed to facilitate your decision regarding my request.
