Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean of studies.
I am writing my appeal today to try and get obtain a credit standing in PSYC 100 from the summer 2015 term and waive the 21 day appeal deadline. I have already written and appeal from the 2014-2015 school year and some of the same circumstances apply to my lower performance in this course as well as the declining health and death of my grandfather.
As mentioned above, during my progression of my studies of PSYC 100 some extenuating circumstances affected my performance. To begin with, I was working on new course of treatment for my diagnosed severe mental illness. I did appeal the previous term because of my mental illness. I have struggled with major depressive disorder for a couple years now. At my lowest states I find my lack of motivation prevents me from leaving my bed for days, or lack any motivation to eat or do my school work for the course. When I made the decision to take PSYC 100 I was in a very good state, my mental illness was under control and I felt confident in my ability to take an online course. Unfortunately my life took a turn in the wrong direction and my studies suffered because of it as my symptoms remerged. This summer I was not able to entirely recover from this to help me mange my life and the online course as my grandfather¿¿s health declined extremely rapidly. I, along with the rest of my close family took on his care. I did such things as take him and my grandma to appointments for which we had to travel, pick up various pieces of equipment for his palliative care and help with his care at home like administering medication, washing and feeding him. It felt as though my summer consisted of watching him suffer and eventually pass away. I was very close to my grandfather and I¿¿ve still been having a very difficult year as I still grieve his death. I did not think to appeal my grade for the course until so late due to many commitments and ceremonies that occurred after my grandpa¿¿s death. I was advised by an academic advisor to take action now for an appeal. I do not have any real supporting documentation about this, as the main reason I did not do well in the course was the amount of time I had to dedicate to my grandpa¿¿s care and grieving. I have attached a link at the end of the letter to his obituary in lieu.
My future plans and academic goals at Queen¿¿s have started to be implemented. I¿¿ve had to be less ambitious when it came to my grades than what I would have liked in order to be realistic. I have been following a new course of treatment for my depression that was started in the summer and the ¿bumps¿¿ associated are much more manageable. As for my grandpa¿¿s death, time is the only thing that can heal this pain. I also consult a counsellor back home and my family of course. The first semester for the 2015-2016 was difficult but not a bad as watching my grandpa suffer day by day as in the summer. I have worked this year to make it more successful than my first year at Queen¿¿s. So far my depression has not been as debilitating and I seem to be progressing well and am on track to do better in the winter term as well.
Thank you for your time and attention,
Alison Purcell
