Petition Letter
Dear Associate Deans,
There are two grades from the Fall 2015 semester that I wish to appeal due to the circumstances that I will outline below. The two grades are from GRMN 101 and POLS 385.
On November 4th 2015, I received a call from my mother informing me that my grandfather was found partly conscious in his apartment the night before. He was 84 at the time of the incident and of good health, so this came to a surprise to us all. On the 5th, I received another call from my father that his conditions had significantly worsened over night and that I needed to get home as soon as I could, so I flew home immediately. Upon arriving at the hospital I was informed that the circumstances had become even worse over a few hours, as my grandfather was in the ICU and on life support. This was a very hard thing to comprehend for me because only the day before did I become aware that he was very ill and then I suddenly had to accept that he was on life support until further notice. Once tests were completed it was determined that he had T-cell lymphoma, which the doctor described as the worst of skin cancer with an even worse recovery process if he were to even wake up.
On November the 6th, all of my family had flown in or come in and we said our goodbyes later that day. He passed in the early evening of the 6th, which came all too suddenly for all of us. Due to the time it took to plan for the funeral and the following procedures, while Remembrance Day was approaching, the funeral was not until the 12th.
My grandfather and I were very close as I was the oldest grand child, ahead by 7 and half years. Due to the suddenness of the situation, I was very shaken up. I was very emotionally unstable, so I did not return to campus until November 16th. There was no time for me to deal with everything that I was feeling during the time I was home from the 5th until the 16th, so returning to school was very hard for me. It was also difficult to return in Week 10 of classes, trying to catch up with the week and a half that I missed, completing my final papers, all while trying to prepare for exams that were only a couple weeks away.
Due to those circumstances, I did not do as well as I normally would in two of my classes, as I struggled to catch up, while trying to deal with all the emotions I was feeling. In the time that I was away, I missed two lectures for POLS 385 and four lectures for GRMN 101. This was problematic because I missed learning important concepts of statistics in POLS 385 and learning a new language is a big commitment. The emotional stress on top of the regular stress of being a student was a lot.
I did my best to handle this situation by trying to put aside the emotional stress in order to attempt to complete everything as best as I could. In the time that has followed I have consulted the counseling program provided, as I am still trying to deal with everything.
With all this being said, I wish to appeal for credit standing for the two courses indicated, due to the fact that I was unable to perform to my normal standard as a result of the emotional stress and timing of the passing of my grandfather.
