Regarding: Appeal to Academic Course Drop-out
To the Associate Dean (Studies),
This academic appeal is being made with the intention of dropping GRMN 101 (Winter, 2016). My German classes take place every Wednesday and Friday evening. On the twenty-forth of February, I was contacted by my mother and informed that my father had collapsed early that morning and was in the hospital after being subjected to multiple attempts of resuscitation¿¿at the time, he was physically stable, but it was necessary that I return home the following day (February twenty-fifth). After being on a ventilator for just under 48 hours, my father was taken off life support at 5:00am Friday the twenty-sixth. The following week, my family and I made the necessary preparations to deal with my father¿¿s passing¿¿hindering me from attending school. The memorial took place March sixth, and I returned to school the following day.
As a result of this sudden passing, it has been quite hard to focus and catch up on my schooling. However, in an attempt to catch up, I have prioritized the courses and readings that need to be done. GRMN 101 is the only half-year course that I am taking and has proven to be one of my lowest priorities. Because of the time line in which these extenuating circumstances took place, I missed three lectures and web-work. What makes it difficult to sufficiently catch up in GRMN 101 is that crucial information is taught throughout the lectures, and that information must be practiced thoroughly in order to fully understand it. Furthermore, I missed a week¿¿s work of lectures and necessary tutorials and seminars for my other full year-courses. In order to sufficiently catch up, focus, and succeed on my upcoming exams, I would like to drop out of this half-year course. My other classes are quite time consuming and require me to dedicate much of my time to reading an extensive amount of material and writing mandatory papers. Learning the fundamentals of a different language proves to quite difficult considering the amount of school I missed, time-consuming, and therefore low on my list of priorities.
If this appeal is approved and I am able to successfully drop GRMN 101, it would be much easier to focus on the other, more pressing courses this semester. Moreover, GRMN 101 is not a necessary course my study of focus. The timing of my situation has been quite inconvenient and has jeopardized any chance of myself being able to dedicatedly focus on my schooling; however, with the absence of this course, I will have a better chance to focus on the workload of my full year courses, and hopefully succeed on my final exams.
