Academic Plan
My Academic Plan:
I will be returning to studies for a Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies. I will be finishing the 300 and 400 level courses required for my degree, as well as taking crosslisted courses in order to obtain the required number of units for graduation.
I will be returning as a part time student. In the past, I have become overwhelmed and unsuccessful when attempting full time studies. As I am aware of this fact about myself, as well as the fact that I will be working, I believe that I will achieve the most success by taking one course at a time at first. I may, at a later date, take 2 ¿¿ 3 courses at a time, but only after I have successfully completed a number of courses, have decided to take on fewer hours at work, and am confident in my ability to manage my coursework without becoming overwhelmed.
The strategies for success that I have already employed and will soon employ are:
1. Managing my mental health through regular visits to a family physician, counseling and appropriate medication. My mental health was the biggest obstacle to academic success in the past, and I believe that both the time away from school and the steps I have taken to manage my mental health will be of the most benefit to me in my return to studies.
2. Taking one course at a time, and planning my time effectively. Previously, I became overwhelmed and unable to cope with the deadlines of full time study. In taking one course at a time, and using planning ideas from Learning Strategies, I believe I will be able to take coursework in stride and complete it in a timely manner.
3. Working on issues of procrastination and perfectionism. I have found methods such as the Pomodoro method extremely helpful in battling procrastination. I also find that planning early deadlines for having work completed is effective in beating ¿¿first draft worries¿ and allows for time to revisit and revise work without the mental block of having to create a flawless first draft.
I have great confidence that following through with my plan will provide me with the tools and capabilities to achieve academic success.
