Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean,
I am writing an appeal today in hopes of dropping my fall semester courses:
- MATH 126 (FALL 2015)
- ECON 222 (FALL 2015)
- ECON 223 (FALL 2015)
- EMPR 200 (FALL 2015)
My father suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (brain aneurism) in mid November of 2015. It was sudden and did not give me time to sort out school before leaving. We were told by doctors that after a bleed of this severity, that there was 50/50 chance over the first month or so whether or not the patient lives. I started contacting my professors in early December, to arrange writing my exams in January or February. After my father's discharge from the ICU there were a seemingly never-ending string of operations and procedures. My father's ongoing health problems prevented me from returning to school and made it impossible for me to complete work. For the first two or so months I was at the hospital every few hours. This situation has caused me to have large anxiety attacks. My family physician wrote a letter for my professors expressing her concerns that I was unfit to sit my exams until this term.
In addition to my dad's ongoing health problems, my grandmother passed unexpectedly in February. Losing two significant family members in such a short period of time has been extremely difficult. After my grandmother's passing, I decided to stay home to help my mom. Both my brother and sister have career obligations away from home. Balancing dealing with the hospital, insurance companies and everything with my grandmother, was simply too much for my mother (who also has a business to run) to handle alone.
For purposes of disclosure, the film media course I took in fall of 2015 was only completed due to an error in the online final exam. I completed all of the course material except for the last assignment (which my professor did not expect, given my circumstances). Because of the online exam glitch, the whole class received their current standing as their final mark in the class.
It was my original intention to complete my fall term exams, but at this point I know that I have not retained enough material to do a good job. The past few months feel as though they have flown by and I have not had a chance to clear my head. These events have made my day-to-day life extremely difficult and taxing the past few moth, and I am hoping to arrange everything so I can get a fresh start at Queen's this coming fall.
I have attached documentation from the ICU social worker, my family physician, as well as my grandmother's published obituary, which lists me by first name.
