I am writing to request an appeal of my BIO102 mark and CHEM112 mark. I would like to apply for a credit standing in BIO102 and to drop my CHEM112 mark.
I was unaware of the 21 day deadline to apply for credit standing in BIO102, and after speaking to an academic advisor on May 3rd, she recommended that I apply to appeal my mark due to the challenges I was facing at the time. I was having a very hard time transitioning to university life in the first semester, which was aggravated by my dysthymia and anxiety. I was prescribed medication just before coming to Queen¿¿s and was still struggling substantially. I was not in a good place in regards to my mental health, and was finding it hard to find a support system at Queen¿¿s. I also did not have any academic accommodations first semester as I was unaware that I was eligible until the beginning of second semester. In addition I suffered a concussion in May of 2015. As a result I was unable to write my final exams in grade twelve and found it difficult to recall information from my high school courses. The grade I received in this course does not at all represent my capabilities. I was unable to perform as well as I am sure I would have, due to these circumstances.
I would also like to apply to drop my CHEM112 mark. Unfortunately I suffered a second concussion early in February of this year, that severely affected my ability to both attend class and tutorials and to complete course work to the best of my ability. My medication had stopped working about a month before the final exam, causing my dysthymia and anxiety to get extremely bad. The night before I was intended to write my chemistry exam my anxiety kept me up all night and prevented me from being able to write my exam. I went to LaSalle and was written a note that exempt me writing the exam that day as well as being prescribed a medication to help with my anxiety attacks. I ended up being hospitalized later that night for my mental health issues. Come time for me to write the chemistry exam on April 29th, I had just been prescribed a new medication a few days prior, that I was still adjusting to. The medication had not yet started to work, thereby not improving the state of my mental health. I got almost no sleep the night before, could not focus during the exam and was very distraught and anxious.
What happened this year is not at all an accurate reflection of my academic capability. I was struggling significantly and found it very hard to manage my academic obligations, and to receive the grades I know I am capable of. I am working diligently on a path to recovery, in order to be well enough to perform to the best of my ability in my further studies at Queen¿¿s. Although first year was very difficult for me I am confident that my grades will improve in the future in order to show my full capabilities.
The letter from LaSalle has been sent to the Arts and Science faculty office. I have included documentation detailing the concussions that I suffered, as well as documentation from my family doctor that speaks to the issues I have been facing this year.
